Replacing an electric furnace? The HH unit takes its place. Keeping your furnace? We add a coil to it.

HHCentral: the air handler

The Hylex multi-position indoor unit (HH series) takes the place of an electric furnace and uses your ducts. Built-in R-454B leak detector and mitigation control, per Samsung. Optional 5 to 20 kW electric heat kits.

HCAdd-on: the coil on your furnace

A Hylex cased A-coil (HC series) goes on the furnace you keep. The heat pump heats and cools; the furnace takes over when needed. We do not touch the burner or the gas or oil supply.

03 · Heat pump or furnace?

Drop the temperature: who heats?

With an add-on, the Hylex and your furnace share the winter, never heating together. Slide the temperature and change the switch point.

Outdoor temperature: -5 °CSwitch point

Samsung’s control unit lets the heat pump lockout be set from 7 °C (45 °F) to -29 °C (-20 °F), in 5 °F steps. On Hydro-Québec’s dual-energy rate DT, the switch is set by Hydro-Québec: -12 °C or -15 °C, depending on the region.

04 · On the furnace

The coil, its detector, and who does what.

The Hylex coil sits on your furnace. It has its own R-454B detector; Samsung requires a mitigation controller to act on a leak, and the MXD-U001XN control unit to run the furnace.

Nothing hidden: these parts are in the quote when your install needs them.

The MXD-U001XN control unit

Required by Samsung, even with its own indoor unit, and sold separately. We include it in the quote.

A 24 V thermostat

Hylex works with a standard 24 V thermostat. Samsung recommends a two-stage thermostat.

Electric heat kits, optional

In a central install, on the HH unit: 5 to 20 kW depending on the model (up to 10 kW on 2-ton units, 15 kW on 3-ton units). For 15 and 20 kW, Samsung offers the HA15B0CH1 single-point breaker kit.

The A2L mitigation controller

Required with an HC coil (add-on), per Samsung: HA00A00203H1. The HH unit already has its own.

Heat pump + furnace: Hydro-Québec’s rate DT.

A central heat pump paired with a gas, oil or propane furnace can open the door to the DT dual-energy rate. Here is how it works, per Hydro-Québec.

What people ask about the Hylex add-on.

In a central install, the Hylex air handler (HH) replaces the electric furnace. In an add-on, a Hylex coil (HC) goes on the furnace you keep, and the furnace takes over when needed.

With the Samsung indoor unit, the Hylex Standard is not ENERGY STAR certified. Since November 26, 2025, Hydro-Québec requires that certification.

A standard 24 V thermostat, ideally two-stage per Samsung. The MXD-U001XN control unit is required.

Down to -25 °C (-13 °F) for the whole range. Premium 2 and 3 tons keep 100% of rated capacity down to -20 °C; the others down to -10 °C, per the Samsung spec sheets (except Standard 5 tons, not stated).

It can: rate DT is for dual-energy systems that heat with electricity, with a fuel as backup (natural gas, oil, propane or wood pellets); a central heat pump paired with a furnace qualifies.
