Quick facts
The 8HK electric heating element is the backup heat Hitachi specifies for the JPE air handlers of the airCore 700 central heat pump. It is installed on site, inside the air handler, and supplies supplemental or emergency heat when the heat pump is no longer enough.
The electric complement to a central heat pump
The JPE air handler installation manual is clear: if the unit is to receive electric heat, use only the 8HK elements listed on its nameplate. Single-phase elements range from 2 to 20 kW. Once the element is installed, its model is written on the air handler's nameplate.
Which output for which air handler?
- JPE18B3XB2HS1A: 2, 5, 8 or 10 kW
- JPE24B3XC2HS1A: 2, 5, 8, 10 or 15 kW
- JPE30B3XD2HS1A and JPE36B3XD2HS1A: 2, 5, 8, 10, 15 or 20 kW
For each combination, the airCore 700 technical catalogue gives the element amperage at 240 V, the minimum circuit ampacity and the maximum overcurrent protection. We start from these values and from the home's heat loss calculation.
Installation points
In some horizontal installations, the element's disconnect must be rotated 180° so that the up position corresponds to on, as required by the UL 60335-2-40 standard. For the 15 and 20 kW elements, the manual shows two-circuit power supply diagrams. Connections are made with copper conductors, by qualified personnel.

What to know before installing
- Size the kit from the heat-loss calculation and the air handler: 15 and 20 kW do not fit every JPE.
- After installation, mark the installed kit on the air handler nameplate.
- In some horizontal installs the kit’s service disconnect must be rotated 180° (UL 60335-2-40 requirement).
- For 15 and 20 kW kits, the air handler manual shows two-circuit power layouts: follow the one that fits your installation.
- Copper conductors only, connected by a licensed electrician or qualified technician.

Frequently asked questions
Which rating do I need?
It depends on the home’s heat loss and on the air handler. The JPE18 takes 2 to 10 kW, the JPE24 up to 15 kW, the JPE30 and JPE36 up to 20 kW. We run the numbers with you.
Can I use a kit from another series?
No. The JPE manual says to use only the 8HK kits listed on its nameplate.
Does the electrical panel need work?
Often, yes: the kit needs its own circuit, sized from the manufacturer’s table for your air handler. An electrician checks the panel capacity.
Can you install it?
Yes. We fit the kit in the air handler and commission it with the heat pump, everywhere in Greater Montréal.
