Quick facts
The modulating furnace that works with your heat pump, not instead of it
An electric furnace designed around the heat pump
Many homeowners who add a central heat pump keep an electric furnace for the coldest days. The Dettson Suprême Modulante SUP27-M240V20 goes further than simple backup: in a communicating system, with the coil on the return side, its elements can run at the same time as the heat pump. Dettson also provides automatic backup with a 2-stage or modulating heat pump, using the CALME and FUSION modes, as well as the K03081 interface.
The furnace delivers 27 kW at 240 V, or 20.3 kW at 208 V. Its output is modulated by solid-state controls, from 0 to 100%, based on a 5 to 100% demand sent by a modulating thermostat (PWM signal) or by a communicating thermostat. Dettson builds it into its Right-Sized® system with its heat pumps, and names the Alizé for modulating cooling. It is therefore best suited to a complete central heating and cooling project, designed as a whole.
How it is installed in a home in the region
Take a semi-detached house on the North Shore that is switching to a central heat pump. The SUP27-M240V20 takes the place of the old furnace: it is 36 1/2 in high and 22 in deep, weighs 105 lb, is approved for zero clearance and installs in upflow, downflow, horizontal or suspended position. Dettson states that it works with Smart Duct® small ducts as well as conventional ductwork.
The electrical panel has to take two circuits: a breaker of no more than 60 A for terminal block 1 and one of 90 A for block 2, at 240 V (50 A and 80 A at 208 V). The published total current is 118.8 A at 240 V, and both copper and aluminum wire are approved. One point calls for care: the maximum cooling capacity is not the same in every Dettson document. We therefore confirm it before choosing the coil and the heat pump.
AirGreen’s role in your project
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years. With our RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work, we carry out the whole system, from the heat pump to the furnace:
- free in-home estimate and assessment of heating and cooling needs;
- choice of the heat pump, the coil and the communicating or modulating thermostat;
- installation of the furnace and of the coil on the return side, and connection to the ductwork;
- connection of the two circuits using the breaker sizes Dettson publishes;
- commissioning, setup of the control interface and of the backup modes.
We serve Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the South Shore and the North Shore.

The electric partner of a central heat pump
The SUP27-M240V20 modulates its output from 0 to 100% and can work with a heat pump: in a communicating system, with the coil on the return side, the elements and the heat pump run at the same time. Dettson builds it into its Right-Sized® system with its heat pumps.
- Adding a Dettson central heat pump with modulated electric backup heat
- Communicating systems where the heat pump and the elements run together
- Automatic backup with a 2-stage or modulating heat pump (CALME and FUSION modes)
- Homes with conventional ductwork or with Smart Duct® small ducts

What to know before installing
- Two supply circuits: terminal block 1, breaker of no more than 60 A at 240 V (50 A at 208 V); terminal block 2, breaker of no more than 90 A at 240 V (80 A at 208 V).
- Ampacity calculated per CSA C22.2-236: 53.1 A and 90.0 A at 240 V; 48.0 A and 78.0 A at 208 V.
- Simultaneous operation with the heat pump requires a communicating system and a coil on the return side; Dettson provides the K03081 interface.
- Controlled by a modulating thermostat (terminals V/W2, C, R, G, Y1, Y2, O, DH) or a communicating one (terminals 1, 2, R, C and RJ11 cable).
- The maximum cooling capacity differs from one Dettson document to another: we confirm it before choosing the coil.
- For downflow on a combustible floor, the furnace sits on the DFB-SUP base.
- The furnace alone is not a heat pump: it does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.

Frequently asked questions
Can the heat pump and the elements run at the same time?
Yes, under two conditions Dettson publishes: a communicating system and a coil on the return side. Dettson also provides the K03081 interface for the heat pump.
What are the CALME and FUSION modes?
They are the automatic backup modes Dettson provides when the furnace is paired with a 2-stage or modulating heat pump. We set them according to the chosen heat pump at commissioning.
Which heat pump should it be paired with?
Dettson pairs it with its own heat pumps in its Right-Sized® system and names the Alizé for modulating cooling. Since the maximum cooling capacity varies from one Dettson document to another, we confirm it before choosing the coil.
Does it need two electrical circuits?
Yes. Block 1 needs a breaker of no more than 60 A at 240 V and block 2, no more than 90 A at 240 V. We check the electrical service and the panel during the free estimate.
Does the furnace qualify for the LogisVert grant?
Not on its own. An electric furnace is not a heat pump and does not qualify for Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert grant.
