Quick facts
30 kW, modulated: the capacity of a large furnace, metered out to demand
A large furnace that does not only run flat out
A large home needs a large furnace for days of intense cold, but those days remain the exception. The Dettson Suprême Modulante SUP30-M240V20 meets both needs: it delivers up to 30 kW at 240 V (22.5 kW, or 76,884 BTU/h, at 208 V), and its solid-state control modulates the output of the elements from 0 to 100%. When demand is low, the furnace delivers only part of it. A 1 HP ECM motor moves the air.
It suits owners of a large forced-air home who want modulated central electric heating, with or without a heat pump. The 30 kW size is nonetheless confirmed by assessing the heating needs, which we do during the estimate.
Two ways to control it
Dettson describes two control modes. With a modulating thermostat, the furnace receives a 5 to 100% PWM demand through terminals V/W2, C, R and G, plus Y1, Y2, O and DH. With a communicating thermostat, it connects to terminals 1, 2, R and C with an RJ11 cable, and the protocol also sends a 5 to 100% demand. A control interface is then used to set up the whole unit.
If a heat pump is added, communicating mode comes into its own: with the coil on the return side, the heat pump and the elements can run at the same time. Dettson also provides automatic backup with a 2-stage or modulating heat pump, using the CALME and FUSION modes, and the K03081 interface.
What the house needs to provide
The panel has to take two circuits: a breaker of no more than 60 A for terminal block 1, at both 240 V and 208 V, and no more than 100 A for block 2 at 240 V. The elements draw 124.3 A at 240 V. In terms of space, the furnace is 36 1/2 in high and 22 in deep, weighs 105 lb, is approved for zero clearance and installs in four positions, or suspended. It works with conventional ductwork as well as with Smart Duct® small ducts. Finally, since the maximum cooling capacity is not the same from one Dettson document to another, we confirm it before choosing the coil.
Installation by AirGreen
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. Whether your home is in Longueuil, on the South Shore, in Laval or on the North Shore, we follow the same steps:
- free in-home estimate, including a check of the electrical service;
- choice of thermostat, modulating or communicating;
- setting the furnace in place and connecting it to the 20 x 20 in supply opening;
- wiring the two circuits, commissioning and setup at the control interface.

A large furnace that does not only run flat out
The SUP30-M240V20 delivers up to 30 kW at 240 V, but its solid-state control modulates the output from 0 to 100% according to the thermostat’s demand. A control interface is used to set up the whole unit.
- Large homes whose heating-needs assessment confirms a 30 kW size
- Projects with a modulating thermostat or a communicating thermostat
- Systems with a 2-stage or modulating heat pump (automatic backup, CALME and FUSION modes)
- Conventional ductwork or Smart Duct® small-duct systems

What to know before installing
- Two supply circuits: terminal block 1, breaker of no more than 60 A at both 240 V and 208 V; terminal block 2, breaker of no more than 100 A at 240 V (90 A at 208 V).
- Ampacity calculated per CSA C22.2-236: 57.3 A and 98.4 A at 240 V; 51.7 A and 85.2 A at 208 V. Element current of 124.3 A at 240 V.
- Modulating thermostat (terminals V/W2, C, R, G, Y1, Y2, O, DH) or communicating thermostat (terminals 1, 2, R, C and RJ11 cable): these are the two control modes Dettson describes.
- The maximum cooling capacity differs from one Dettson document to another: we confirm it before choosing the coil.
- For downflow on a combustible floor, the furnace sits on the DFB-SUP base.
- The furnace alone is not a heat pump: it does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.

Frequently asked questions
Which thermostat does this furnace need?
Dettson describes two modes: a modulating thermostat, which sends a 5 to 100% PWM demand (terminals V/W2, C, R, G, Y1, Y2, O and DH), or a communicating thermostat (terminals 1, 2, R and C, RJ11 cable). We choose with you the one that suits the planned system.
What is the control interface for?
According to Dettson, it is used to set up the whole unit. We use it at commissioning to adapt the furnace to the house and to the chosen thermostat.
What cooling capacity can be paired with it?
Dettson’s documents do not give the same maximum capacity for this model. We confirm the applicable value before choosing the coil and the outdoor unit.
Does it work with a heat pump?
Yes. In a communicating system, with the coil on the return side, the heat pump and the elements can run at the same time. Dettson also provides automatic backup with a 2-stage or modulating heat pump (CALME and FUSION modes) and the K03081 interface.
Does it need two electrical circuits?
Yes: a breaker of no more than 60 A for block 1, at both 240 V and 208 V, and no more than 100 A for block 2 at 240 V (90 A at 208 V). We check the electrical service and the panel during the free estimate.
