YORK central heat pumps: YH5 or HH8, what sets them apart at the same tonnage
At −15 °C (5 °F), the HH8 keeps 72 to 82% of its certified heating capacity at 8.3 °C; the YH5 LX keeps 49 to 55%. The rest shows in your yard and basement: footprint, weight, electrical circuit, line sets.
Where to start? Pick what matters to you.
The HH8 systems are ENERGY STAR
With its side discharge, the HH8 is the shallowest central unit in our catalogue at 2, 3 and 5 tons. Clearances are not in the YORK documents we read: we check them at the visit.
Compare dimensionsAt 1.5 tons, our catalogue only has the YH5 LX: our HH8 starts at 2 tons. At 4 tons, our catalogue has the YH548; YORK also sells the HH860 for 4 and 5 tons with a capacity switch, but our listing shows it at 5 tons.
See the YH5 LXThe HH8 gets LogisVert’s
The YORK documents we read give no per-model sound level. YORK claims “as low as 54 dBA” for the HH8 and, for the YH5, “as low as 69 dBA” in its technical guide and “76 dBA or lower” on its product page, with no test conditions.
The two YORK central systems in our catalogue, two ways to heat.
Same brand, same indoor family; what changes is the compressor, the discharge direction and cold-weather performance.

At 2 and 3 tons both families pair with the same JHE air handler; at 5 tons our listings pair two different indoor units. The “Difference” column reads HH8 minus YH5.

YORK designs the central system; AirGreen installs it in your home.
AirGreen measures the house, picks the family and the tonnage with you, then installs the outdoor unit and the air handler.
What YORK brings

Outside, the YORK unit. Inside, the JHE air handler.
A YORK central heat pump is two units certified together under one AHRI number: the one in the yard and the one in the house, in the basement or a closet. LogisVert excludes an indoor unit or ducts installed outside the insulated envelope, in the attic for example.
YH5 LX
- Top discharge, base from 24 × 24 in. (1.5 tons) to 35 1/4 × 31 3/4 in. (4 and 5 tons).
- 124 to 255 lb operating weight.
- Crankcase heater and discharge muffler factory-installed on every model.
HH8
- Side discharge: 13 to 17 5/7 in. deep, up to 57 1/2 in. tall (5 tons).
- 116.8 to 244.7 lb operating weight.
- Crankcase heater and base-pan heater as standard; the YH5 guide mentions no base-pan heater.
YORK JHE air handler
- Multiposition: upflow, downflow or horizontal; 21 in. deep at most.
- Nine-speed ECM blower, MaxAlloy™ “A” coil, factory-installed TXV.
- Total air leakage of 2% or less; 1 in. filter.
- At 4 and 5 tons, optional JSE short cabinet: upflow only, 57 in. tall at most. That is a different pairing: its AHRI number and LogisVert eligibility are checked on the quote.
Thermostat: YORK lists conventional controls for both families, and ENERGY STAR lists no connected function for either.
In deep cold, how much of its heating capacity each family keeps.
Four test points are published: 8.3 °C, −8.3 °C and −15 °C by ENERGY STAR; −25 °C by NEEP. Nothing is published between these points, and we don’t estimate any. The bar shows the share of the 8.3 °C capacity that remains.
4,363 heating degree-days a year (18 °C base).
The daily low drops below −10 °C on about 63 days a year.
The average January daily low is −14.0 °C: the −15 °C test point matches an ordinary January night.
The daily low drops below −20 °C on about 14 days a year, and below −30 °C on 0.27 days a year on average.
Below −25 °C, no value is published in the sources we read: we size the backup heat at the visit.

Seasonal heating efficiency, calculated for a climate region: region V stands for a colder climate than region IV. NEEP lists both for the HH8.
Heat delivered divided by electricity used, at a given temperature. A COP of 2 gives twice as much heat as electricity.

What people ask us about YORK central systems.
YH5 or HH8: which one for a Montreal house?
If deep-cold heating matters most, the HH8: its matched systems are ENERGY STAR
Do the YH5 and the HH8 use the same indoor unit?
At 2 and 3 tons, yes: the JHE24B5AC2SS1 and JHE36B5CD2SS1 serve both families. At 5 tons, our listings pair the YH560 with the JHE60D5CH2SS1 and the HH860 with the JHE60C5CH2SS1. Each matched system has its own AHRI number.
Can I keep my gas furnace?
YORK allows pairing the YH5 and the HH8 with a gas furnace, and for the HH8, even one of another brand. The indoor unit is then no longer the JHE on our list: LogisVert eligibility, the AHRI number and the amount of that combination are checked on the quote. Gas work goes to a partner holding the proper RBQ licence.
Why does the HH8 get more LogisVert than the YH5?
Your YORK central system, chosen at your home and installed by AirGreen.
At the free visit, we pick the family, YH5 LX or HH8, and the tonnage with you; the quote gives the exact matched system and its AHRI number.
