The comfort of an ECM motor in a 15 kW electric furnace

For homes already thinking about air conditioning

You heat with electricity through ductwork and you plan to add central air conditioning or a heat pump in the coming years. The Dettson Suprême Avantage SUP15-A240V12 was designed for that scenario. It heats with electric elements that switch on in sequence, then hands air distribution to a 1/2 HP ECM motor whose airflow is set separately for heating and for cooling.

In practice, the day a coil is added on the supply or return side, up to 3 tons, the airflow can be adjusted for cooling mode instead of staying locked on the winter setting.

What the Dettson sheet states

The furnace delivers 15 kW at 240 V and 11.3 kW at 208 V, with a first stage of 10 kW at 240 V. The front panel groups the continuous-fan switch, the low/high power switch, the heat-demand indicator light and the breakers. Dettson publishes a 54 °F temperature rise at 240 V and covers parts for 5 years in residential use, as well as the ECM motor for 5 years. Labour is not covered by the manufacturer.

In a Quebec home

Whether you live in a bungalow in Laval, a cottage on the South Shore or a plex in Montreal, the location is easy to sort out: the Suprême installs upflow, downflow with the DFB-SUP base depending on the floor, horizontal to the left or right, or suspended. It is 36 1/2 in high and 22 in deep, and it is approved for zero clearance and for copper or aluminum wiring.

On the electrical side, Dettson calls for an 80 A maximum breaker at 240 V (70 A at 208 V). The manual does not publish the ampacity for this size: our team confirms it before wiring. The standard connection uses two wires; three wires are possible with accessories.

With a heat pump, the elements become the backup heat, but Dettson requires that they never heat at the same time as the heat pump. The thermostat we install takes this rule into account.

01 · What it is for

An electric furnace that gets the house ready for air conditioning

The SUP15-A240V12 heats air with electric elements that switch on in sequence. Its ECM motor lets the airflow be set separately for heating and for cooling, which makes it a good base for a coil of up to 3 tons.

  • Homes with ductwork that plan central air conditioning or a heat pump
  • Replacing an old furnace with an electric model with adjustable airflow
  • Basement, horizontal or suspended installations, thanks to the multi-position design
  • Mobile homes: the unit is approved for this type of installation
Adjustable airflowThe 1/2 HP ECM motor is set for heating and for cooling.
5-year motor warrantyDettson covers the ECM motor for 5 years, on top of 5 years on parts in residential use.
Front-panel controlsContinuous fan, low/high power, heat-demand indicator light and front-mounted breakers.

03 · Before installing

What to know before installing

  • Sold alone, an electric furnace is not a heat pump: it does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.
  • Dedicated circuit: 80 A maximum breaker at 240 V (70 A at 208 V); 64.4 A total current at 240 V. The manual does not publish the ampacity for this size: we confirm it before wiring.
  • With a heat pump, Dettson requires non-simultaneous operation of the elements and the heat pump: the thermostat must manage it.
  • The air-conditioning or heat-pump coil is not included; it goes on the supply or return side.
  • Standard 2-wire connection; a 3-wire connection (120–208/240 V) requires accessories.
  • In downflow, the DFB-SUP base may be required depending on the type of floor.

06 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does the ECM motor bring to this furnace?

It lets the airflow be set separately for heating and for cooling. The PSC version in the same series, the SUP15-A240D12, uses a direct-drive motor instead. We help you choose based on your ductwork and your plans.

Can I add central air conditioning?

Yes. Dettson allows a coil on the supply or return side, up to 3 tons of cooling. The airflow is then set for cooling mode.

How does it work with a heat pump?

The elements become the backup heat. Dettson requires non-simultaneous operation, though: the elements and the heat pump never heat at the same time, and the thermostat must manage it.

What electrical circuit is needed?

An 80 A maximum breaker at 240 V (70 A at 208 V), for a total current of 64.4 A at 240 V. The ampacity for this size is not published in the manual, so we confirm it before wiring.

Does it qualify for a grant?

No. Sold alone, an electric furnace is not a heat pump and does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.

What warranty does Dettson offer?

Parts for 5 years in residential use and 1 year in commercial use, ECM motor for 5 years. Labour is not covered by the manufacturer warranty.
