Quick facts
An 18 kW ECM furnace to back up your central heat pump
The role of the SUP18-A240V12
A central heat pump heats the house for most of the winter, but it needs a backup heat source. The Dettson Suprême Avantage SUP18-A240V12 plays that role. The heat-pump coil goes on its supply or return side, up to 3 tons, and its electric elements take over when the thermostat calls for them.
One point to know: Dettson requires non-simultaneous operation. The elements and the heat pump never heat at the same time; the thermostat chooses one source or the other. We set up the system accordingly.
What you get
The furnace delivers 18 kW at 240 V (13.5 kW at 208 V), with a first stage of 9 kW. Its 1/2 HP ECM motor lets the airflow be set separately for heating and for cooling, which helps match the furnace to the coil. Dettson publishes a 65 °F temperature rise at 240 V and covers the ECM motor for 5 years, on top of parts for 5 years in residential use. Labour is not covered by the manufacturer.
The controls stay simple: continuous-fan switch, low/high power switch, heat-demand indicator light and front-mounted breakers.
In a home in the region
This model suits ducted homes whose heating needs come to 18 kW, whether in Longueuil, Laval or a Montreal neighbourhood. The electrical side can be planned ahead: Dettson publishes a 94.7 A ampacity and calls for a 100 A maximum breaker at 240 V. The furnace is wired on two wires, or on three wires with accessories.
As for location, the Suprême is multi-position: upflow, downflow with the DFB-SUP base depending on the floor, horizontal or suspended, at 36 1/2 in high and 22 in deep. It is approved for zero clearance and for copper or aluminum wiring.
What AirGreen does
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years. Our RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work lets us handle every step:
- the free on-site estimate and the written quote;
- setting the furnace and wiring it;
- integrating the coil and connecting the ducts;
- programming the thermostat to respect non-simultaneous operation;
- setting the ECM airflow and commissioning.
We also work on the North Shore and the South Shore.

Backup heat for a central heat pump
Paired with a heat-pump coil of up to 3 tons, the SUP18-A240V12 becomes the home’s backup heat source. Its ECM motor adjusts the airflow separately for heating and for cooling.
- Central heat-pump projects that keep or install an electric furnace as backup
- Adding central air conditioning to existing ductwork
- Replacing an 18 kW electric furnace with an ECM-motor model
- Basement, horizontal or suspended installations
Specifications

What to know before installing
- Sold alone, an electric furnace is not a heat pump: it does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.
- With a heat pump, Dettson requires non-simultaneous operation of the elements and the heat pump: the thermostat must manage it.
- Dedicated circuit: 100 A maximum breaker at 240 V (90 A at 208 V) and 94.7 A ampacity at 240 V.
- The air-conditioning or heat-pump coil is not included; it goes on the supply or return side.
- Standard 2-wire connection; a 3-wire connection (120–208/240 V) requires accessories.
- In downflow, the DFB-SUP base may be required depending on the type of floor.

Frequently asked questions
Can it serve as backup for a central heat pump?
Yes. The heat-pump coil goes on the supply or return side, up to 3 tons. Dettson does require non-simultaneous operation, though: the thermostat runs either the heat pump or the elements, never both at once.
Why choose the ECM motor over the PSC version?
The 1/2 HP ECM motor lets the airflow be set separately for heating and for cooling, and Dettson covers it for 5 years. The PSC version in the series, the SUP18-A240D12, uses a direct-drive motor.
What electrical circuit is needed?
A 100 A maximum breaker at 240 V (90 A at 208 V). Dettson publishes a 94.7 A ampacity and a 78.1 A total current at 240 V.
How warm is the air at the registers?
Dettson publishes a 65 °F temperature rise at 240 V between the return air and the supply air.
Does it qualify for a grant?
No. Sold alone, an electric furnace is not a heat pump and does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.
What is the manufacturer warranty?
Parts for 5 years in residential use and 1 year in commercial use; ECM motor for 5 years. Labour is not covered by Dettson.
