Quick facts
A 20 kW ECM furnace, ready for a heat pump of up to 5 tons
Designed for large systems
When a large home switches to a central heat pump, the electric furnace does not disappear: it becomes the backup heat and the blower for the whole system. The Dettson Suprême Avantage SUP20-A240V20 was designed for that role in high-capacity projects. It accepts an air-conditioner or heat-pump coil of up to 5 tons, on the supply or return side, and its 1 HP ECM motor, with a 12 x 9 blower wheel, lets the airflow be set separately for heating and for cooling.
With a heat pump, Dettson requires non-simultaneous operation: the elements and the heat pump never heat at the same time, and the thermostat chooses the source. We program this logic at installation so the switch from one source to the other happens without any action on your part.
The sheet, in brief
The furnace delivers 20 kW at 240 V and 15 kW at 208 V, or 51,256 BTU/h, with a 10 kW first stage. The elements switch on in sequence and can be replaced individually. Dettson publishes a 65 °F temperature rise at 240 V and covers parts for 5 years in residential use as well as the ECM motor for 5 years. Labour is not covered by the manufacturer.
For maximum airflow, Dettson’s sheet and manual do not agree. We prefer to set the ECM motor for the coil actually installed rather than display an uncertain figure.
Preparing the house
In a large home in Laval, on the South Shore or in the west of Montreal, three things are checked during the visit. The circuit: 125 A maximum breaker at 240 V and 106.5 A ampacity according to Dettson. The ducts: a high-capacity coil needs a system able to carry the air. The location: the furnace is multi-position, upflow, downflow with the DFB-SUP base depending on the floor, horizontal or suspended, at 36 1/2 in high and 22 in deep.
The AirGreen team at work
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. We can therefore carry out the whole project:
- free on-site estimate, with a load calculation and a duct inspection;
- a written quote for the furnace, the coil and, if needed, the heat pump;
- setting the unit, the electrical connection and the duct connections;
- setting the ECM airflow, configuring the thermostat and commissioning.
We also serve Longueuil and the North Shore.

Backup heat for a large central heat pump
The SUP20-A240V20 combines 20 kW of electric elements with a 1 HP ECM motor and a 12 x 9 blower wheel. It accepts an air-conditioner or heat-pump coil of up to 5 tons, and its airflow is set separately for heating and for cooling.
- A high-capacity central heat pump, up to 5 tons, with the elements as backup
- Large ducted homes that want high-capacity central air conditioning
- Replacing a 20 kW furnace with an ECM-motor model
- Upflow, downflow, horizontal or suspended installation
Specifications
From the manufacturer’s documentation. A value the manufacturer does not publish is not listed.
What to know before installing
- Sold alone, an electric furnace is not a heat pump: it does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.
- Large dedicated circuit: 125 A maximum breaker at 240 V (100 A at 208 V) and 106.5 A ampacity at 240 V according to Dettson. Your electrical service capacity must be checked.
- With a heat pump, Dettson requires non-simultaneous operation of the elements and the heat pump: the thermostat must manage it.
- Dettson’s sheet and manual do not publish the same maximum airflow for this model: we set the ECM motor for the coil actually installed.
- The coil is not included. Standard 2-wire connection; 3 wires possible with accessories.
- In downflow, the DFB-SUP base may be required depending on the type of floor.

Frequently asked questions
What heat pump or air conditioning can be paired with it?
An air-conditioner or heat-pump coil of up to 5 tons, on the supply or return side. We choose the capacity based on your home’s load calculation.
What maximum airflow does it deliver?
Dettson’s sheet and manual do not give the same value for this model. Since the ECM motor is adjustable, we set the airflow at commissioning based on the coil installed and your ducts.
How does it differ from the SUP20-A240V12?
The SUP20-A240V12, from the same series, has a smaller ECM motor and accepts less cooling. The SUP20-A240V20 gets a 1 HP ECM motor with a 12 x 9 wheel and accepts up to 5 tons.
What electrical circuit is needed?
A 125 A maximum breaker at 240 V (100 A at 208 V). Dettson publishes a 106.5 A ampacity and an 88.0 A total current at 240 V.
Can the elements and the heat pump heat together?
No. On this model, Dettson requires non-simultaneous operation: the thermostat runs either the heat pump or the elements.
Does it qualify for a grant?
No. Sold alone, an electric furnace is not a heat pump and does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.
