DIRECT AIR × AirGreen · Heat Xtreme Pro R-454B

Heat Xtreme Pro R-454B: the only DIRECT AIR wall unit with a published figure at −30 °C.

It comes in 5 sizes from 6,000 to 24,000 BTU/h, with R-454B refrigerant. NEEP publishes, for each one, the maximum heat it still delivers at −30 °C: from 3,200 to 11,900 BTU/h. Here is what those figures mean, size by size, and what Direct Air has not published yet.

−30 °C, plainly

At −30 °C, an R-454B delivers about half its rated capacity. The figure exists, and that is what sets it apart.

The other DIRECT AIR wall units have no published point that cold: with NEEP, the 23 SEER stops at −20 °C, the DA25 and the Heat Xtreme Pro R-410A at −15 °C; the 18 SEER has none. A night below −30 °C happens about once every five years at Montréal-Trudeau; below −20 °C, about 12 nights a year.

Each size’s curve

From 8.3 °C down to −30 °C: the maximum heat listed by NEEP, size by size.

Each bar is measured against the same size’s capacity at 8.3 °C. Under each bar: the share of the rated capacity and the COP at that output.

8.3 °C16,000 BTU/h133% of rated capacity · COP 3.35
−8.3 °C12,800 BTU/h107% of rated capacity · COP 1.75
−15 °C11,500 BTU/h96% of rated capacity · COP 1.80
−30 °C5,900 BTU/h49% of rated capacity · COP 1.25

Maximum capacity listed by NEEP for AHRI system 216571373 (DIRM4-12HXPRO28-1Z + DIRM4-12HP-WM). The share is based on the rated capacity (12,000 BTU/h).

The 9,000 and 12,000 have the same published heating figures at 8.3, −8.3 and −15 °C (16,000, 12,800 and 11,500 BTU/h at most). They part ways at −30 °C (5,100 versus 5,900) and on LogisVert: only the 12,000 qualifies, since the program requires a rated cooling capacity of at least 12,000 BTU/h.

The R-410A version keeps a published warranty: 10 years compressor, 5 years parts and labour (July 2022 brochure).

The choice

You want a published figure at −30 °C and a low-GWP refrigerant: R-454B. You want a written warranty today: R-410A, or the R-454B once its warranty is published.

Not published yet

What we know about the R-454B, and what we confirm before quoting.

As of October 26, 2026, Direct Air has published neither a brochure nor a warranty for the DIRM4 models. So we do not borrow the R-410A figures for them.

Questions

What people ask us, and what the sources say.

Does the Heat Xtreme Pro R-454B heat at −35 °C?

No operating range is published for the R-454B: the −35 °C comes from the brochure of the R-410A version (July 2022), and Direct Air has not yet published a brochure for the DIRM4 models. The coldest point listed by NEEP is −30 °C (−22 °F): from 3,200 BTU/h (6,000) to 11,900 BTU/h (24,000) at most. No figure is published below that.

Why do the 9,000 and 12,000 have the same heating figures?

NEEP gives them the same maximum capacities at 8.3, −8.3 and −15 °C (11,500 BTU/h at −15 °C for both). They differ at −30 °C (5,100 versus 5,900 BTU/h), in rated cooling (9,000 versus 12,000 BTU/h) and on LogisVert: only the 12,000 qualifies.

What warranty does the R-454B have?

As of October 26, 2026, Direct Air has not published a warranty for the DIRM4 models. We will put it on the quote as soon as Direct Air publishes it; until then, we do not carry over the R-410A one (10 years compressor, 5 years parts and labour).

How much does LogisVert give for an R-454B?

On the October 14, 2026 list: $1,440 for the 12,000, $2,160 for the 18,000 and $2,664 for the 24,000. The 6,000 and 9,000 do not qualify (under 12,000 BTU/h of rated cooling capacity). Hydro-Québec confirms the amount when you apply.

What does a GWP of 470 change for me?

GWP measures a refrigerant’s warming effect if it escapes. R-454B (470) has a GWP about 4.4 times lower than R-410A (2,088), per the values listed by ENERGY STAR. In normal use the circuit is sealed: the figure matters mostly in case of a leak and at the end of the unit’s life.
