Quick facts
30 kW on 480 V three phase, with the certifications an engineer or inspector asks for
For buildings supplied at 480 V
Thermo 2000’s VoltMax SCR 30-480-3 PH is a commercial electric hot-water boiler that connects directly to a 480 V three-phase supply. It delivers 30 kW, or 102,360 BTU/h according to the manufacturer, and draws only 36.1 A at full output. It heats a loop of radiators, baseboards or radiant floor in a commercial, institutional or multi-unit building, with no GHG emissions on site.
The VoltMax SCR series also comes in 208 V, 240 V and 600 V. Before recommending the 480 V version, we therefore confirm your building’s actual voltage, whether it is in Montreal, Laval or on the South Shore.
Certifications and documents
In an engineered project, certifications and documentation matter as much as output. The VoltMax carries the CSA mark for Canada and the United States, to CSA C22.2 No. 165-92 and UL 834. Its tank complies with CSA B-51-14, is CRN registered and carries the ASME Section IV H stamp. Thermo 2000 publishes an engineering specification, a manual and a brochure, which you will find in the Documents section of this page.
Operation and controls
Output is measured out by a solid-state relay (SCR) that modulates from 0 to 100%, alongside the relay stages that the controller alternates. According to Thermo 2000, this modulation limits peak power demand. The Incoloy immersion elements are replaceable.
The Schneider Electric controller, with a 3 in backlit display, sets the setpoint from 50 °F to 200 °F and applies outdoor reset with the included sensor. It communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP, accepts an external 0-10 Vdc control for setpoint and output, and sends its alarms by email through its Ethernet port. A 2nd setpoint and a pump contact with or without priority allow an indirect water heater to be added.
AirGreen’s installation
We start with a free on-site estimate, followed by a written quote. It includes the circulator and expansion tank, which are not among the supplied parts, and the low-water cut-off if the project requires it: at this size, it is optional. The boiler weighs 310 lb (141 kg), holds 11 US gal of water and needs clearances of 3 in at the sides and rear, 24 in at the front and 32 in above.
Our technicians connect it to the loop through its four 1 1/2 in male NPT side connections, pipe the discharge of the factory-installed relief valve and mount the outdoor sensor. The electrical connection, with protection and conductors sized from the nameplate, is made under AirGreen’s RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 (ventilation, refrigeration and electrical).
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, also installing in Longueuil and on the North Shore. Thermo 2000 warrants the tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.
