Quick facts
A 72 kW, 480 V boiler that talks to your building’s system
The 480 V VoltMax SCR 72, and the buildings it is meant for
Thermo 2000 designs the VoltMax SCR for commercial and institutional buildings. This 72 kW version runs on 480 V three-phase (manufacturer designation: VOLTMAX SCR 72-480-3 PH) and produces 245,664 BTU/h. It heats a closed loop, whether the water serves a radiant floor, hot-water unit heaters, the coils of an air handling unit or an indirect water heater.
480 V is found mostly in industrial parks and some commercial buildings. That is where this version fits: a warehouse with offices in Laval, a manufacturing shop on the North Shore, a service building whose mechanical room is already wired for 480 V.
Designed for building management
Many of these buildings have a central management system. The VoltMax SCR’s Schneider Electric controller communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP, so the system can read its status, alarms and settings. It also accepts an external 0-10 Vdc signal to impose the temperature setpoint or the output when the building’s sequence is in charge.
Without a central system, the boiler manages on its own. Its included outdoor sensor adjusts water temperature to the weather; its schedules match heating to occupied hours; and its Ethernet port gives access to a web page and sends alarms by email, which helps in a building where nobody is on site at night.
On the electrical side, Thermo 2000 lists 86.6 A on 480 V. SCR modulation varies output from 0 to 100% through solid-state relays, which, according to the manufacturer, limits peak power; the controller also rotates its stages.
The job with AirGreen
We start with a free on-site estimate: 480 V service, panel, condition of the loop, access to deliver a 310 lb boiler. The written quote that follows specifies what is added to the unit, including the circulator and expansion tank, which Thermo 2000 does not supply.
Our crews then install the boiler within the published clearances (24 in in front, 32 in above, 3 in on the sides and back), connect the 1 1/2 in NPT piping, wire the 480 V supply, mount the outdoor sensor, then fill and purge the loop. At commissioning, we set the setpoint, the outdoor reset curve and the schedules, and we coordinate the BACnet connection with the firm that manages your system.
The warranty is Thermo 2000’s: 10 years on the tank (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and 2 years on electrical and mechanical components. AirGreen, a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work.

A 72 kW boiler built into the building’s system
In a commercial or industrial building on 480 V, the VoltMax SCR 72 heats the hot-water loop and reports its status to the central management system. It can also work on its own, with its outdoor sensor and schedules.
- Warehouses with offices and light industrial buildings on 480 V three-phase
- Buildings with a BACnet central management system
- Radiant floors, hot-water unit heaters or air handling unit coils
- Replacing a commercial electric boiler on a 480 V service
Specifications

What to know before installing
- 480 V three-phase, 60 Hz power supply: 86.6 A according to Thermo 2000. We confirm the capacity available at the panel before quoting.
- Connecting BACnet to the building system is coordinated with the firm that maintains it: plan for their visit in the schedule.
- Circulator and expansion tank: not on Thermo 2000’s list of supplied components, they are added to the quote to suit the loop.
- Leave 24 in clear in front of the boiler, 32 in above and 3 in on the sides and back, according to Thermo 2000.
- Weight of 310 lb (141 kg): access to the mechanical room must allow delivery.
- Schneider Electric controller
- Outdoor temperature sensor
- ON/OFF control switch
- Control and power fuses and breakers
- SCR relays
- Two limit controls, automatic and manual reset
- Factory-installed relief valve
- Drain valve
- Low-water cut-off (standard above 60 kW)

Frequently asked questions
Can it be connected to our building management system?
Yes. The controller communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP and accepts a 0-10 Vdc signal for setpoint and output. We coordinate the connection with the firm that manages your system.
What current does it draw on 480 V?
Thermo 2000 lists 86.6 A on 480 V three-phase, 60 Hz. We check the service and the panel during the free estimate.
How do we know when it is in fault?
The controller shows alarm codes on its backlit screen and, through the Ethernet port, can send alarms by email. A web page also lets you check it remotely.
What comes with the boiler?
According to Thermo 2000: the controller, the outdoor sensor, a control switch, control and power fuses and breakers, the SCR relays, two limit controls, the factory-installed relief valve, the drain valve and the low-water cut-off.
Can you install it?
Yes. We deliver the boiler, connect it to the loop and the 480 V supply, mount the outdoor sensor, then commission it and set up the controller.
