The VoltMax 45 on 480 V three phase
Thermo 2000’s VoltMax is a hot water electric boiler intended for commercial and institutional buildings. This 45 kW model runs on 480 V three phase: it produces 153,540 BTU/h and draws 54.1 A. It is part of the series’ configuration A, from 22.5 to 90 kW, in a range that goes up to 180 kW.
It suits commercial and industrial buildings supplied at 480 V that heat through a hot water loop: radiant floors, radiators or hot water coils.
What comes with the boiler
To plan a job, you need to know what the manufacturer supplies. Thermo 2000 ships the VoltMax with its Schneider Electric controller, the outdoor temperature sensor, a control ON/OFF switch, the control and power fuses and breakers, the SCR relays, two limit controls, one automatic and one manual, the factory-installed relief valve and the drain valve.
The controller varies the output from 0 to 100% through the SCR solid-state relays, in addition to relay stages that it rotates. Thermo 2000 points out that this modulation limits peak power demand. It also adjusts the water temperature to the weather, within a 50 °F to 200 °F setpoint range, communicates over BACnet IP or MS-TP and offers a web page and email alarms through its Ethernet port.
What is left to plan
The circulator and expansion tank are not on the list of supplied parts: they are chosen for the loop. On this 45 kW size, the low water cut-off is available as an option; it is only standard above 60 kW. You also need to plan the relief valve discharge, at 3/4 in female NPT, and a dedicated 480 V circuit.
As for space, the boiler connects to the loop through four 1 1/2 in male NPT side connections. Thermo 2000 requires 24 in in front, 32 in above, 3 in on the sides and at the back, and no clearance at the floor. The unit weighs 310 lb (141 kg).
Installation by AirGreen
The on-site estimate is free in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and on the South Shore. We list what is supplied and what is left to plan, then give you a written quote that covers the circulator, the expansion tank and, if your project requires it, the low water cut-off.
Our technicians then install the boiler, connect it to the loop, mount the outdoor sensor and make the electrical connection under our RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, which covers ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. We fill, purge and program the controller before commissioning. AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years. Thermo 2000 covers the tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years.

What comes with it, and what is left to plan
The 480 V VoltMax 45 comes with most of its controls and safety devices. What remains to plan is the circulator, the expansion tank and, if the project requires it, the optional low water cut-off.
- Commercial and industrial buildings on 480 V three phase
- Projects where the contractor wants to know exactly which parts are supplied
- Radiant floor, radiator or hot water coil loops
- Replacing an electric boiler on a 480 V distribution
Specifications

What to know before installing
- 480 V three-phase, 60 Hz supply, for a current of 54.1 A; the electrician sizes the protection and conductors from that value.
- The circulator and expansion tank are not on the list of supplied parts: they are chosen for the loop.
- The low water cut-off is an option on sizes of 60 kW and less, such as this one: we check with you whether your project requires it.
- The relief valve is factory-installed (3/4 in female NPT outlet); its discharge is piped on site.
- Clearances: 24 in in front, 32 in above, 3 in on the sides and at the back, none at the floor.
- Schneider Electric controller with backlit display
- Outdoor temperature sensor
- Control ON/OFF switch
- Control and power fuses and breakers
- SCR relays
- 2 limit controls, one automatic, one manual
- Factory-installed relief valve
- Drain valve
