Quick facts
165 kW on 600 V to heat the building and its domestic hot water
What it does and which buildings it suits
The VoltMax SCR 165 is a Thermo 2000 commercial electric boiler, here in its 165 kW, 600 V three-phase version. The manufacturer rates it at 562,980 BTU/h. Like any hot-water boiler, it heats a closed loop that feeds baseboards, radiators, a radiant floor or hydro-air coils. Its controller goes further: it manages a second setpoint for an indirect water heater, so the same boiler can also produce domestic hot water.
This two-in-one role appeals to owners of residential buildings, residences and managers of commercial buildings who want space heating and hot water in the same mechanical room.
Two setpoints, one boiler
The Schneider Electric controller has a pump contact with or without domestic hot water priority. With priority, the indirect water heater is served first when it calls for heat; without priority, space heating and hot water share the output. The setpoint adjusts from 50 °F to 200 °F (10 °C to 93 °C), and the supplied outdoor sensor adjusts the heating water temperature to the weather.
SCR modulation from 0 to 100%, through solid-state relays, matches output to actual demand, which limits peak power demand according to Thermo 2000. The controller shows its alarm codes in French or English and can send its alarms by email through its Ethernet port.
In a Quebec building
On a 600 V three-phase service, the VoltMax SCR 165 draws 158.8 A. For a residence in Montreal or a building on the North Shore, the mechanical room has to hold the boiler, the indirect water heater and their pumps. The vertical boiler takes up little room there: 3 in of clearance on the sides and back, 24 in in front and 32 in above. It weighs 550 lb (250 kg) and holds 30 US gal of water.
The installation, step by step
We start with a free on-site estimate: electrical service, loop, emitters, hot water needs and available space. The written quote then specifies the boiler, the indirect water heater, the circulating pump and the expansion tank, the last three not being on Thermo 2000’s list of supplied items.
Our crews install the boiler, connect the loop, the indirect water heater and the 600 V circuit, fill and purge the system, then set the two setpoints, the priority and the outdoor sensor. Thermo 2000 warrants the boiler’s tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and its electrical and mechanical components for 2 years. AirGreen, a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 in ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work.

In Montreal, on the North Shore, in Laval, Longueuil or on the South Shore, the on-site estimate is free and the quote is in writing. Financing is available.
Space heating and domestic hot water for the same building
In a residential building or a residence, the same boiler can heat the premises and, through an indirect water heater, the domestic hot water. The VoltMax SCR 165 controller handles two setpoints and a pump contact with or without domestic hot water priority.
- Residential buildings and residences on 600 V three-phase power
- Projects that add an indirect water heater to the heating loop
- Hot-water baseboards, radiators, radiant floors or hydro-air coils
- Replacing an existing commercial electric boiler

Frequently asked questions
Can the VoltMax produce domestic hot water?
Not directly: it heats the loop, and an indirect water heater connected to that loop produces the domestic hot water. The controller provides a second setpoint for that water heater and a pump contact with or without priority.
What does "with or without priority" mean?
With priority, the domestic hot water demand comes before space heating; without priority, both are served at the same time. The choice is made when setting up the controller, based on how the building is used.
Is the indirect water heater included?
No. It is not among the items supplied by Thermo 2000; we select it with you based on the building’s needs and list it in the quote.
What warranty does Thermo 2000 offer?
According to its documents: 10 years on the tank (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and 2 years on electrical and mechanical components, parts and accessories.
Can you install it?
Yes. We connect the boiler to the heating loop and, where applicable, to the indirect water heater, then to the 600 V circuit. Commissioning includes setting the two setpoints, the priority and the outdoor sensor.
