Quick facts
17.5 kW: the right output when 15 kW is no longer enough
An in-between output, chosen with care
The Stelpro SFE1821 delivers 17.5 kW at 240 V. This size fills the gap between the 15 and 20 kW models of the SFE series: it fits when the heat loss calculation is above 15 kW without justifying 20 kW. A correctly sized furnace calls for an electrical supply in proportion to your real needs.
Otherwise, it shares the series’ strengths: an electronic board that modulates individually framed elements, an Eco mode, a built-in temperature sensor, two manual-reset thermal cut-outs and a 1/3 HP motor with four speeds, from 800 to 1,000 CFM at 0.5 in w.c. Its continuous heat buttons are published at 2.5 kW minimum and 5 kW maximum.
Example: the owner’s unit in a duplex
In Montreal, many duplex owners live on the ground floor and in the basement, heated by a furnace and ductwork. When that furnace reaches the end of its life, the SFE1821 goes in the same spot: upflow against a wall with zero clearance, or horizontal. For ductwork that runs downward, Stelpro provides the FSB2 adapter, sold separately.
If a central heat pump is added later, the board is already ready. In Type A mode, the factory setting, the heat pump is downstream and the elements stay off during its call. In Type B mode, it is on the return side and the furnace makes up for its loss of capacity in cold weather. The board also compensates during defrost.
Electricity, to check first
Stelpro publishes a total amperage of 75 A at 240 V and 66 A at 208 V, a voltage at which the output drops to 13.2 kW. In an older plex, the capacity of the electrical service deserves a check: it is one of the first things we look at during the estimate.
What AirGreen does
A family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. We come to you for a free estimate, then give you a written quote. Our technicians remove the old unit, set the SFE1821 and connect it to the ducts, make the electrical connection according to Stelpro’s manual and the rating plate, then set the motor speed and the 24 V thermostat. Plan for a standard 20 x 20 x 1 in filter, not supplied with the furnace.
Your free estimate
In Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and the South Shore, ask for your free estimate: we confirm the output, give you a written quote and present the financing available.
17.5 kW, between the 15 and 20 kW sizes
The SFE1821 is aimed at homes whose heat loss calculation is above 15 kW without calling for 20 kW. It keeps the series’ 1/3 HP 4-speed motor and an electronic board that modulates the elements.
- Large bungalows and two-storey houses whose calculation comes to 17.5 kW
- The owner’s unit in a ducted duplex or triplex
- Replacing an existing furnace on the same ductwork
- Adding a central heat pump, with the furnace as backup

What to know before installing
- Sold alone, an electric furnace is not a heat pump: it does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.
- Total amperage of 75 A at 240 V (66 A at 208 V): the electrical panel’s capacity is checked before choosing this size. Breaker and conductor sizes are confirmed from the manual and the rating plate.
- At 208 V, the published output is 13.2 kW.
- The 930 CFM speed is optional and is not wired at the factory.
- The filter (20 x 20 x 1 in), the FSB2 adapter and the SCOND neutral terminal block are not included.
- Filter frame for a standard 20 x 20 x 1 in air filter (filter not included)

Frequently asked questions
What is the exact output of the SFE1821?
Stelpro publishes 17.5 kW at 240 V and 13.2 kW at 208 V for this model. The 18 in the model number is a code: the published output is what counts for sizing.
Can my electrical panel supply it?
Stelpro publishes a total amperage of 75 A at 240 V and 66 A at 208 V. During the free estimate, we check the capacity of your electrical service and panel. Breaker and conductor sizes are then confirmed from the manual and the rating plate.
Can it work with a heat pump?
Yes. In Type A (factory setting), the heat pump is downstream and the elements do not heat during its call. In Type B, it is on the return side and the furnace makes up for its loss of capacity in cold weather. The board also compensates during defrost.
Can it be installed horizontally?
Yes. Stelpro provides three configurations: upflow, downflow with the FSB2 adapter (sold separately) or horizontal. The cabinet can also be installed with zero clearance against a wall.
What warranty does Stelpro offer?
Stelpro warrants the furnace for 5 years from the date of purchase against defects in material or workmanship, for the original purchaser only. Disconnection, transport and installation are not covered by the manufacturer.
