Quick facts
A 15 kW furnace that lets the heat pump work and takes over when needed
Why the ECM version at 15 kW
The Stelpro SFECM1521 delivers 15 kW at 240 V, with the SFE series’ modulating electronic board and its individually framed elements. Its strength: a 1/2 HP variable-speed ECM motor. Instead of a few wired speeds, it follows airflow values set with 7-position potentiometers, different for continuous fan, first-stage heating (W1), second-stage heating (W2) and cooling (Y1). Stelpro points to the constant airflow and better efficiency of this type of motor.
It makes the most sense when the furnace has to work alongside a central heat pump, or when you want to keep a low-speed continuous fan running, within a range of 300 to 700 CFM according to Stelpro.
Example: a split-level home adding a heat pump
Picture a split-level home on the North Shore, heated through ducts, where the owners are adding a central heat pump. The SFECM1521 goes in the basement upflow, set against the wall with zero clearance, or horizontal if the space calls for it. With the coil downstream, Type A mode (factory setting) keeps the elements off while the heat pump answers the call. With the coil on the return side, Type B mode lets the furnace make up for the heat pump’s loss of capacity in cold weather. In both cases, the board compensates during defrost.
In summer, the Y2 terminal accepts two-stage cooling, and the cooling airflow is set separately from heating. The board also has terminals for a humidifier and an air cleaner.
On the electrical side
Stelpro publishes a total amperage of 65 A at 240 V. In a building supplied at 208 V, the output becomes 11.2 kW and the amperage 56 A. Breaker and conductor sizes are confirmed from the installation manual and the rating plate: our team takes care of it before any wiring.
On installation day
AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. After the free estimate and the written quote, our technicians:
- remove the old unit and install the SFECM1521 in the chosen configuration;
- connect it to the ducts and, where applicable, to the heat pump coil;
- make the electrical connection;
- set each airflow to suit your ductwork and configure Type A or Type B mode;
- start the system and show you the thermostat settings.
The 20 x 20 x 1 in filter is not supplied, nor are the FSB2 adapter or the SCOND neutral terminal block: we add them to the quote when needed.

15 kW and airflow matched to your heat pump
The SFECM1521 heats with elements that its board modulates to match the demand. Its variable-speed ECM motor follows airflow values set with potentiometers for each mode, so cooling can be set independently of heating.
- Ducted homes whose heat loss calculation comes to 15 kW
- Pairing with a central heat pump with one or two cooling stages
- Homes that keep a low-speed continuous fan running
- Adding a humidifier or an air cleaner connected to the board

What to know before installing
- Sold alone, an electric furnace is not a heat pump: it does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.
- Total amperage of 65 A at 240 V and 56 A at 208 V. Breaker and conductor sizes are confirmed from the installation manual and the rating plate.
- At 208 V, the published output is 11.2 kW instead of 15 kW.
- Each airflow is set during commissioning, to suit the ductwork and the matched equipment.
- Not included: the 20 x 20 x 1 in filter, the FSB2 adapter (downflow) and the SCOND neutral terminal block.
- Filter frame for a standard 20 x 20 x 1 in air filter (filter not included)

Frequently asked questions
Why choose the SFECM1521 over the SFE1521?
Both deliver 15 kW with the same modulating board. The SFECM1521 adds a 1/2 HP variable-speed ECM motor, airflow set per mode and the Y2, air cleaner and humidifier terminals. The SFE1521 runs on a motor with preset speeds instead.
Can the cooling airflow be set separately?
Yes. Stelpro publishes a range specific to cooling (Y1), separate from the W1 and W2 heating ranges and from continuous fan. We set each one during commissioning, to suit the ductwork and the outdoor unit.
Does it work with a two-stage thermostat?
Yes. It accepts a 24 V thermostat with 1 or 2 stages (W1/W2) or a thermostat with an outdoor sensor, and its Y2 terminal allows two-stage cooling.
What warranty does Stelpro offer?
Stelpro warrants the furnace for 5 years from the date of purchase against defects in material or workmanship, for the original purchaser only. Disconnection, transport and installation are not covered by the manufacturer.
Does it qualify for a grant?
No, not sold alone: the LogisVert grant targets heat pumps, and an electric furnace is not one.
