Same family, two generations of refrigerant.

At DURASTAR, almost every model comes in an R-454B (“Low GWP”) version and an R-410A version. R-32 is only used in PTACs and through-the-wall air conditioners. Tap a card: the chart shows where each one sits in the catalogue.

Rules: in Canada, the Ozone-depleting Substances and Halocarbon Alternatives Regulations (SOR/2016-137, current to June 21, 2026) set no global-warming-potential limit for residential heat pumps. In the United States, manufacturing new residential systems with a refrigerant of GWP 700 or more, such as R-410A, has been banned since January 1, 2025 (40 CFR 84.54): that is why manufacturers are moving to R-454B. DURASTAR’s R-454B spec sheets list a leak detection system.

On our site, each central system also appears as an “electric furnace”: that is the indoor cabinet (air handler) of the same system, same series and same size.

We add the outdoor heat pump and a coil on your existing furnace. “ADD-ON” is our name for this setup; the coil width (14.5 to 24.5 in.) follows your furnace.

Hydro-Québec pays $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heat at -8°C for an ENERGY STAR cold-climate heat pump, $50 for a standard ENERGY STAR unit, if the outdoor unit is at least 12,000 BTU/h. Choose a type: here are the highest amounts confirmed in Hydro-Québec’s tool.
