Quick facts
Replace an old unit heater without picking the wrong size
The Sterling HSB09611 at a glance
The HSB09611 is a horizontal hot-water unit heater from Sterling’s HS series. Hung from the ceiling, it runs the water from your loop through a standard header-type coil, and a propeller fan blows 1,400 CFM of warmed air, at 930 FPM at the outlet. Sterling publishes 69,700 BTU/h with 200°F entering water, 60°F entering air and a 20°F drop, and 62,700 BTU/h at reduced speed.
It lends itself well to replacement: the old unit heater in a store, a shared garage or a warehouse gives out, but the hot-water loop and the electric boiler stay in place.
Replacement: what we compare
- Ratings, under the same conditions. A BTU/h figure means nothing without the water temperature that goes with it. The HSB09611’s is given at 200°F. If your boiler supplies less, Sterling publishes the factors to apply: 0.857 at 180°F, 0.715 at 160°F, 0.571 at 140°F, 0.429 at 120°F.
- Water flow. The HSB09611 needs 7.0 GPM with a 20°F drop, for a pressure drop of 0.29 ft H2O. We check that the existing circulator can supply it.
- Connections and footprint. Pipe connection size and dimensions are not in the data we verified. We confirm them with Sterling before ordering, then adapt the piping and supports as needed.
- Electrical. The 1/12 HP motor runs on 115 V, single phase, 60 Hz; it is single speed, totally enclosed with thermal overload protection.
In a mixed-use building
In Montreal as in Laval or Longueuil, many buildings house a store on the ground floor and apartments upstairs, all heated by a central electric boiler. The store often has a door that opens constantly and a poorly insulated back room. A ceiling unit heater keeps the floor clear there and connects to the loop already in place. If part of the loop contains propylene glycol, Sterling also publishes correction factors for that mix.
Installation by AirGreen
Our technicians isolate and drain the section of loop involved, remove the old unit, hang the HSB09611 by rods, level, then connect it with isolation valves and air purging. They redo the 115 V electrical connection and the control, put the loop back in service and check the flow. AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal for more than fifteen years, holding RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 (ventilation, refrigeration and electrical), and we also serve the North Shore and the South Shore.

Replacing an old unit heater, with a comparable rating
When a unit heater in a store or garage reaches the end of its life, the HSB09611 can take its place on the existing loop. We first compare the ratings under the same conditions.
- Ground-floor store in a mixed-use building heated by an electric boiler
- Replacing a hot-water unit heater at the end of its life
- Shared garage of a rental building
- Workshop or warehouse already connected to a hot-water loop

What to know before installing
- Compare ratings under the same conditions: the HSB09611’s applies to 200°F water. At 160°F, Sterling applies 0.715; at 140°F, 0.571.
- Pipe connection size and dimensions are not in the verified data: we confirm them with Sterling before ordering, then adapt the existing piping as needed.
- The loop must supply 7.0 GPM with a 20°F drop; pressure drop of 0.29 ft H2O.
- 115 V, single-phase, 60 Hz power supply; hung by rods, level.

Frequently asked questions
My old unit heater shows a higher rating: why?
Ratings can only be compared under the same conditions. The HSB09611’s, 69,700 BTU/h, is given for 200°F water, 60°F air and a 20°F drop. We check what basis the old unit was rated on before comparing.
Can the existing piping be reused?
We assess it on site. The HSB09611’s pipe connection size is not in the verified data; we confirm it with Sterling, then adapt the piping if needed.
What water flow is needed?
7.0 GPM with a 20°F drop. The coil’s pressure drop is then 0.29 ft H2O, a figure we use to check the circulator.
What power supply does it need?
115 V, single phase, 60 Hz. The 1/12 HP motor is single speed, totally enclosed with thermal overload protection, according to Sterling.
