Quick facts
A large hot-water unit heater for industrial and commercial buildings
The HSB12011 opens the range of large sizes
With the Sterling HSB12011, the HS series changes scale. This horizontal unit heater blows 1,900 CFM of warmed air, at 900 FPM at the outlet, and Sterling rates it at 87,100 BTU/h with 200°F entering water, 60°F entering air and a 20°F drop. It is driven by a 1/3 HP motor running on 115 V, single phase, 60 Hz, single speed.
Unlike the smaller sizes in the series, Sterling does not publish a reduced-speed rating for this model. Heat is therefore regulated by the control, which runs the unit according to the temperature called for. It is aimed at heavy-vehicle repair shops, light processing plants, materials warehouses and maintenance hangars already served by a hot-water loop.
What an electrically heated Quebec building requires
In a building heated by an electric boiler, adding a unit heater of this size means adding a significant load to the loop. We first check that the boiler has capacity to spare, at the chosen water temperature, on top of the other equipment it supplies.
That temperature changes the actual output. Sterling publishes the factors to apply to the 200°F rating: 0.857 at 180°F, 0.715 at 160°F, 0.571 at 140°F, 0.429 at 120°F and 0.286 at 100°F. With an air-to-water heat pump, which generally works with cooler water, the calculation becomes decisive.
On the circulation side, the HSB12011 needs 8.8 GPM with a 20°F drop, for a pressure drop of 0.39 ft H2O. The loop can contain propylene glycol; the manufacturer publishes correction factors for that mix. The coil is rated up to 150 PSI (1,034 kPa) or 320°F (160°C) on hot water and factory tested at 200 psig (1,379 kPa).
What our installation covers
- Visit, heat-loss calculation and boiler assessment.
- Confirmation with Sterling of weight, dimensions and connections, which are missing from the verified data.
- Hanging by rods from the connections provided, level, on a verified structure.
- Connection to the loop with isolation valves and air purging.
- 115 V electrical connection, control and start-up.

What to know before installing
- Sterling publishes only one rating for this model, with no reduced-speed value: temperature is regulated by the control, which runs the unit as needed.
- Below 200°F, output drops: factor of 0.857 at 180°F, 0.715 at 160°F, 0.571 at 140°F and 0.429 at 120°F.
- The electric boiler must be able to supply this output, at the chosen temperature, on top of the loop’s other loads.
- Weight, dimensions and connections are not in the verified data: we confirm them with Sterling and check the structure that will carry the unit.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a reduced-speed rating for this model?
No. For the HSB12011, Sterling publishes a single rating: 87,100 BTU/h and 1,900 CFM. The 1/3 HP motor is single speed, and the control runs the unit as needed.
What boiler capacity is needed?
The electric boiler must supply the unit heater’s output at the chosen temperature, on top of the loop’s other loads. We do that assessment during the visit.
What does it give with 160°F water?
Sterling applies a factor of 0.715 at 160°F to the 87,100 BTU/h rating measured at 200°F. The result is stated in our quote.
What water flow should be planned?
8.8 GPM with a 20°F drop, for a pressure drop of 0.39 ft H2O.
Does the coil suit a glycol loop?
Yes. Sterling publishes correction factors for propylene glycol, which we apply to the output calculation.
