What the Sterling HSB18011 is
The HSB18011 is one of the large sizes in Sterling’s HS series. This horizontal unit heater hangs from the ceiling, runs the water from your loop through a standard header-type coil and blows 2,200 CFM of warmed air, at 800 FPM at the outlet, through horizontal louvers that come standard. With 200°F entering water, 60°F entering air and a 20°F drop, Sterling rates it at 118,000 BTU/h.
Its 1/3 HP motor is single speed and runs on 115 V, single phase, 60 Hz. Sterling does not publish a reduced-speed rating for this model.
How it compares with the HSB15611
The HSB18011 has a particularity worth knowing. In Sterling’s table, it has a higher rating than the HSB15611, the previous size, but lower airflow and a lower outlet velocity. These values are printed the same way in the manufacturer’s catalogue and installation manual. In practice, the HSB18011 sends more heat with less air, and that air leaves more slowly. In a wide, open space, it can be a good choice; in a deep building, the HSB15611 may suit better. We compare the two at your water temperature before recommending one or the other.
Which spaces, and with what water
Garage with several service bays, covered eco-centre or sorting centre, fabrication shop: the HSB18011 targets wide work spaces heated by an electric boiler or an air-to-water heat pump. Water temperature remains the deciding factor. Sterling publishes the factors to apply to the 200°F rating: 0.857 at 180°F, 0.715 at 160°F, 0.571 at 140°F, 0.429 at 120°F and 0.286 at 100°F.
The circuit must supply 11.8 GPM with a 20°F drop, for a pressure drop of 0.60 ft H2O. The loop can contain propylene glycol, with the correction factors Sterling publishes. The coil is rated up to 150 PSI (1,034 kPa) or 320°F (160°C) on hot water.
What our installation covers
We first confirm with Sterling the weight, dimensions and connections, which are missing from the data we verified. Our technicians check the structure, hang the unit by rods, level, connect it to the loop with isolation valves and air purging, make the 115 V electrical connection and the control, then start it up.

Plenty of heat, a calmer jet
The HSB18011 combines a high rating, 118,000 BTU/h at 200°F, with an 800 FPM jet at the outlet. We always compare it with the HSB15611 before choosing, according to the shape of the space.
- Garage with several service bays
- Covered eco-centre or sorting centre
- Fabrication shop connected to an electric boiler
- Replacing a unit heater of the same size on an existing loop

What to know before installing
- Below 200°F, output drops: Sterling applies 0.857 at 180°F, 0.715 at 160°F, 0.571 at 140°F and 0.429 at 120°F.
- In Sterling’s table, this model has a higher rating than the HSB15611, but lower airflow: we compare the two before recommending one or the other.
- The circuit must supply 11.8 GPM with a 20°F drop, for a pressure drop of 0.60 ft H2O.
- Single-speed 1/3 HP motor, 115 V. Weight, dimensions and connections are to be confirmed with Sterling before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
Why lower airflow than the HSB15611?
That is what Sterling publishes, the same way in its catalogue and in its installation manual: 2,200 CFM and 800 FPM for the HSB18011. We compare the two sizes at your water temperature and according to the shape of the building.
Is the “180” in the model number its output?
No. That code follows another of the manufacturer’s rating bases. On hot water, Sterling publishes 118,000 BTU/h with 200°F water, 60°F air and a 20°F drop.
What water flow should be planned?
11.8 GPM with a 20°F drop; the coil’s pressure drop is then 0.60 ft H2O.
What does it give with 180°F water?
Sterling applies a factor of 0.857 at 180°F to the 118,000 BTU/h rating measured at 200°F. The result appears in our quote.
