Quick facts
A 20 kW electric furnace designed for replacements
Replacement without bad surprises
When an old electric furnace gives out in the middle of January, you want a replacement that fits in without redoing everything. The Dettson Suprême Avantage SUP20-A240D12 ticks several boxes: wired at 240/208 V on two wires, approved for copper or aluminum wiring, zero clearance and a multi-position design. It installs upflow, downflow with the DFB-SUP base depending on the floor, horizontally or suspended. Its published dimensions, 36 1/2 in high and 22 in deep, help us confirm the location during the visit.
The aluminum approval matters in older homes in Longueuil, Montreal or on the South Shore, where the existing supply circuit is sometimes aluminum. We always check its condition and capacity before reusing it.
What this model offers
The furnace delivers 20 kW at 240 V and 15 kW at 208 V, or 51,256 BTU/h. Its elements switch on in sequence, with a 10 kW first stage, and can be replaced individually. The 1/3 HP direct-drive PSC motor, with 3 speeds, is factory-set to its high speed for heating: 1,150 CFM at 0.5 in w.c. Dettson publishes a temperature rise of 60 to 80 °F at 240 V.
On the front panel: continuous-fan switch, low/high power switch, heat-demand indicator light and breakers.
What to plan for
At 20 kW, the circuit is substantial. Dettson calls for a 125 A maximum breaker at 240 V (90 A at 208 V) and publishes a 103.5 A ampacity. We confirm that your electrical service can take it before recommending this model, and the quote spells out any electrical work required. If you are aiming for air conditioning, a coil of up to 3 tons can be added on the supply or return side. With a heat pump, Dettson does not allow the elements and the heat pump to heat at the same time; the K03081 interface manages the switchover.

Replacing a 20 kW electric furnace
The SUP20-A240D12 is for ducted homes that need 20 kW of heat. It is wired at 240/208 V on two wires and accepts copper or aluminum wiring, which simplifies many replacements.
- Replacing an electric furnace in a ducted home whose needs reach 20 kW
- Older homes whose supply circuit is aluminum
- Adding central air conditioning or a heat pump of up to 3 tons
- Upflow, downflow, horizontal or suspended installation
Specifications

What to know before installing
- Sold alone, an electric furnace is not a heat pump: it does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.
- Large dedicated circuit: 125 A maximum breaker at 240 V (90 A at 208 V) and 103.5 A ampacity at 240 V according to Dettson. Your electrical service capacity must be checked.
- With a heat pump, the elements and the heat pump must never heat at the same time (overheating risk according to Dettson): a thermostat or the K03081 interface must prevent it.
- The air-conditioning or heat-pump coil is not included; it goes on the supply or return side.
- Standard 2-wire connection; a 3-wire connection (120–208/240 V) requires accessories.
- In downflow, the DFB-SUP base may be required depending on the type of floor.

Frequently asked questions
My circuit is aluminum. Is that compatible?
Dettson approves this furnace for copper or aluminum wiring. During the estimate, we still check the condition and capacity of the existing circuit before reusing it.
What breaker should I plan for?
Dettson calls for a 125 A maximum breaker at 240 V (90 A at 208 V) and publishes a 103.5 A ampacity at 240 V. Your electrical service must be able to take this circuit.
What heating airflow does it deliver?
The 1/3 HP PSC motor, with 3 speeds, is factory-set to its high speed: 1,150 CFM at 0.5 in w.c. The published temperature rise is 60 to 80 °F at 240 V.
Can I add air conditioning or a heat pump?
Yes, with a coil of up to 3 tons on the supply or return side. With a heat pump, Dettson does not allow the elements and the heat pump to heat at the same time: the thermostat or the K03081 interface prevents it.
Does it qualify for a grant?
No. Sold alone, an electric furnace is not a heat pump and does not qualify for the LogisVert grant.
What is Dettson’s warranty?
Parts for 5 years in residential use and 1 year in commercial use. Labour is not covered by the manufacturer warranty.
