What the tool does not do: it does not choose the output your home needs, it does not give the conductor size, and it does not replace a check of the electrical service. All three are settled on site, during the free estimate.

Heat only, with air conditioning, or a central heat pump

The 29 units in this collection do not all do the same job: start from what you have today.

Electric heat only

You are replacing an electric furnace, or you heat without air conditioning. A KHE or KLE element furnace does the job, from 10 to 27 kW, in stages.

Furnace plus air conditioning, or a heat pump

The furnace accepts a coil of up to 3 tons (10 to 23 kW) or 5 tons (27 kW). The coil and the outdoor unit are not part of the CONFORTO range we offer; they are chosen during the in-home estimate.

CONFORTO central heat pump

Here the MHAH air handler takes the furnace’s place. The indoor part of the MHSD heat pump, it houses the coil and blower in one cabinet, with no built-in heating element; back-up heat comes from an optional MHEAH module, 5 to 25 kW in our shop.

A furnace can also work with a heat pump on its own coil. A heat pump gives less heat as the cold deepens; an electric furnace’s output does not depend on the outdoor temperature. The KHE manual says the furnace control turns on one or more elements during a heat-pump defrost, and CONFORTO’s product page for the KLE Lowboy says it can run at the same time as a heat pump. The CONFORTO central heat pump, for its part, replaces the furnace with its MHAH. Only Hydro-Québec confirms the LogisVert amount granted.

The central heat pump’s indoor unit, 1.5 to 5 tons

In the shop, their title starts with “CONFORTO MHAH Electric Furnace”. They are air handlers (coil and blower in one cabinet), with no built-in heating element, paired with the MHSD outdoor unit of the same tonnage.

The 18 kW’s first stage

On the 18 kW, the first stage is 9 kW: less than the 10 kW first stage of the 15 kW and the 20 kW.

The filter comes with it

The KHE Hiboy ships with a 20 × 20 × 1 in filter. The manual advises against pleated filters unless they are sized for the installation’s airflow.

Your questions about CONFORTO furnaces

What CONFORTO furnace output does my home need?

The output is chosen on site: insulation, windows, storeys and ducts all count. During the free estimate we also look at the electrical service, because a 20 kW furnace alone needs a circuit with a minimum ampacity of 110 A.

Is a 100 A electrical service enough for a CONFORTO furnace?

The furnace circuit alone calls for a minimum ampacity of 60 A (10 kW) to 150 A (27 kW); from 18 kW it reaches 100 A. What your service can carry on top of the rest of the house is checked at your home.

Can a heat pump be added to a CONFORTO furnace?

Yes, with a coil of up to 3 tons (10 to 23 kW) or 5 tons (27 kW). For the KLE Lowboy, CONFORTO’s product page also allows the coil on the return side and running at the same time as the heat pump. The CONFORTO central heat pump in our shop installs with its own MHAH air handler, which replaces the furnace.

PSC or ECM: what changes on a CONFORTO furnace?

The PSC motor is 1/3 hp with 3 speeds (1.9 A), or 3/4 hp with 4 speeds (5.8 A) on the 27 kW. The ECM motor is 1/2 hp with 5 speeds (3.9 A), or 3/4 hp with 5 speeds (5.2 A) on the 27 kW. With the ECM, total amps rise by 2 to 3 A (except on the 27 kW: 114 A either way) and, from 10 to 23 kW, the temperature-rise range widens: on the 20 kW, 60 to 80 °F with the PSC and 50 to 80 °F with the ECM. The breaker and the minimum circuit ampacity stay the same. According to CONFORTO’s KLE Lowboy product page, the PSC motor is offered in Quebec only.

Is a CONFORTO MHAH air handler a furnace?

No. It is the indoor unit of the MHSD central heat pump: coil and blower in one cabinet. It has no built-in heating element; an MHEAH module can be added as an option, 5 to 25 kW in our shop.

What warranty does CONFORTO give on its furnaces?

CONFORTO covers the components of its KHE and KLE element furnaces for 5 years. Labour is not part of this manufacturer warranty.

CONFORTO Hiboy or Lowboy furnace: which one?

The KHE Hiboy takes 20 × 21 in of floor and stands 36 in high; it installs upflow, downflow or horizontal (right). The KLE Lowboy takes 21½ × 44 in and stands 34½ in high: barely lower, but twice as deep. The Hiboy and Lowboy page compares them in detail.
